    cabry's school thing

    Hey people

I got some spare time atm between school and studying so I thought why not writing something more specific how my school "works". As I'm going to write my A-levels (Abitur) in April, we have to write some kind of "Pre-a-levels" under a-level conditions. That means exams in subjects we attend on higher levels will last 300mins (actually only 5h but that are 6 "school hours" ). We have 3 classes on higher level, 1 on normal and one oral (not included in pre-a-level) where we're tested in to pass. As every exam will include all 3 semesters we've had yet it's quite a lot to study to pass with a decent grade. As we have a numerus clausus in Germany (dont know whether other countries got it, too) passing with the highest possible grade is what everyone wants to achieve, because although these are not our final exams every grade will effect our final grading.
That's all what I can think of atm. Just for anyone who's interested in our shitty school system

    so far

cabry.. don't worry about the a-level at school, just wait for your exams @ university

between 25.1. and 14.1. i'm going to write 12 exams. horrible! xD

tbh this sounds worse than university wtf???

Also you sure you got the "numeros closus" term right? In belgium it exists but only for med-school students, it means that even if 500 students pass their final year, only 100 will actually be able to become doctors because there aren't enough doctor licenses to give for every student (fictive numbers)

Also WTF a 5 or 6 hour exam? at uni, it's either oral which takes 10-20-30 mins total to do the exam in the prof's office, or a written exam which just lasts as long as you need to fill in the paper.

Oh and high school here, exams wouldn't last longer than the total hours of that class you have per week

so for math the exam could last as long as 7 hours, while French only 3

also once you were done you could just leave and go home to study the next

Done with another period of studying :>
So this whole thing works like this:
First of all you need to qualify to write your a-levels. Therefore each score of each semester will be added. You have to least 300points to be accepted (that means you have to habe a 'D' or better in each subject, so it's pretty easy).
You chose your subjects you want to do your exams in (that's again quite complicated and I doubt anyone really cares for it, so I wont go further on that one). That's splitted in P1 P2 P3 (higher level) P4 and P5 (oral level).
Pre-A-levels and A-levels are actually the same, except there's no "pre-oral exam".
P1-P3: 300mins + 20min for chosing an exam proposal (you will get 2 proposals so you can chose that one you prefer)
    P4: 240mins + 20mins chosing an exam proposal
P5: 20mins oral exam (10min presentation, 10min discussion with the teacher) + 20mins preparation time (you may take some notes)

The A-levels are the very last exams you can do in school, think that's why they are so tough.

The numerus clausus will only be important if you want to go to university. Because too many people want to study medicin and there are too less professors you need to have a grade point average of 1,0, pretty hard to get and even gets more complicated (told you German school system sucks, glad we finally adopted bachelor and master).

    So...
I'll have my pre-a-levels finished by the end of this month (friday maths, monday english, wednesday physics, thursday chemistry (sucks <.<), I'll do my oral exam in religion because it's pretty easy ).
My "real" a-levels take place during april (2nd, 7th, 9th (saturday -.-) 12th). Then I got some spare time to relax and to study for my oral exam that takes places from 3rd to 5th May.

Our final results will be presented on 24th June when I'm finally done with school.

and Galak: what is that shit in your universities? oral exams in the prof's office... yuck :S

cabry, the NC still exists. Bachelor/Master grades are just for not-certified-studies like Applied Sciences, nature science etc. But if you wanna study medicine there is a NC. The more complicated issue is how the NC becomes determined, cause it depends on the federal states.

Galak, it is normal in Germany. I have 8-12 exams each semester. the time limit depends per subject and fluctuate between 90-180 minutes.
but i dunno why we have so much exams but few lessons o.ö
