Problem officer?
We ( hollanders, belgium, france, german ) 're not celebrate the 'Santa Claus' party. Sure there is Christmas, but not so enthusiastic as in Amerika. We've our own fest on 5 December ( or 6 in Germany) called 'Sinterklaas'. All kids gets presents and the older people gets presents from their kids.
greetz.

Actually, I've always celebrated Sinterklaas AND christmas.
When I was a kid, I did believe "santa claus" and Sinterklaas were two different nice guys who brought me presents every year. Being older now, we still celebrate both, albeit our celebration of the 6th december is nothing more than small presents (or even none if we didn't find any) and the big "party" is on christmas.
Then again this probably varies among families, and maybe even among countries. I don't know whether Santa Claus is less popular in the Netherlands than in Belgium, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is.
What I'm going to say now isn't based on any historical facts, and purely my guessing
I think that Sinterklaas, or Sint Nicolas (or "Saint Nicolas" in French) is an original tradition in Europe dating back from the middle ages, just like Christmas was also a traditional festivity in Europe. This is mostly because Christianity was at its top moment.
Christmas was the celebration of Christ's birth, and "Saint Nicolas" was just another traditional festivity, although I doubt it was already like in our tradition. I don't think they believed (or even told their kids) that an old man was bringing them presents. Actually, I don't think presents were even involved for specific people, i think it was just a general festivity.
After the discovery of America (by christians) the traditions were brought over the ocean, but somehow the dates of the two festivities got messed up, and Saint Nicolas (Santa Claus) was associated WITH Christmas.
Europe, who still had it's original Saint Nicolas on 6th of December was influenced, and took over this "2nd Saint Nicolas".
But when you look at it, we gave a totally different name to this new guy, we call him "Kerstman" in dutch, litterally translated it means "Christmas Man". in French he's called "Père Noël", litterally translated "Father Christmas".
