    cpu temperature

so i wanted to overclock my cpu but i was having some issues with it getting really hot really quick on my old heatsink so i bought a new zalman 110mm heatsink fan.
got it installed and before the fan i was running at roughly 42-45c at idle and up to about 55-58 under full load after about 30 minutes.

just got the new zalman installed and at startup idle it was running about 42-44c started prime95(stress tester) within a minute it was up to 63c with the fan at max spin. as of right now i am not happy. granted its only been installed for about 20 minutes and havent given the arctic silver thermal compound time to cure but my buddy said right on their site it says it may only drop it 2-5c. wondering if maybe im doing something wrong cause this is supposed to be a damn good fan and my factory heatsink is whippin its ass.
i was expecting it to go no higher than maybe low 50's under max

Did you thoroughly clean the surface of the cpu and cooler? Use ethanol or rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth. Make sure you put just enough thermal paste, to much will increase your temp, I believe you only need a tiny tiny drip or arctic silver. Also make sure you're mounting the heatsink fan properly so that it matches the airflow of the rest of your fans.

    edit:
link to your cpu and to your new cooler, it is possible (though highly unlikely) that the stock is better.

yea we cleaned off the cpu didnt use alcohol and stuff but we got everything off. i have 3 fans one side case fan one one rear case fan both 120mm's back one is at the same height as my cpu fan and the side fan is about 3-4 inches below the cpu

i just took some pictures so yall can see the fan setup. ill post those when im done but rear one is blowing out and side is blowing in i believe.
not to mention the desk fan i have positioned on top right above the cpu blowing in. so im sure theres plenty of airflow in the case.

i have an amd phenom II x4 965 black edition cpu and a zalman 7500 110mm heatsink fan

I've got a phenom black 955 and the cooler it came with is excellent (but i upgraded to an arctic cooling 64, amazing heatsink) so it could be that u downgraded a bit.

    edit:
yeah it's very possible, that zalman heatsink isn't anything amazing but I'd need to see how big it actually is (newegg page not to helpful for that). also you shouldnt focus on blasting air into it, tty instead to get all the air flowing more or less from front to back in a nice steady stream. having it flow all different directions could potentially be blowing hot air onto your cpu. post pics soon.

also side note, I just got a new mb and case, pics soon

any chance of pics not off a webcam or cellphone? it's hard to make out what's what.

also unless it's to much trouble you should put the stock heatsink back on and see if the temp drops back to what it was before. if it does than it's almost for sure the zalman's fault.

yea i know damn ipod takes terrible pictures.
i think thats what im gonna do. talking to some people on an overclocking forum they say this zalman is fairly outdated and my current hsf is probably alot better. ill probably slab some arctic silver on it and run it

that is the most peoples problem you want better cooling and then you get a new fan. the fan that comes with the CPU is engineered to be the right one. if you really need better cooling ask a professional's opinion on what fan to use for your purpose otherwise get H2O cooling or if you have big bux LN2 (you should know LN2 looks AWESOME!)

That's what I though. the x4 series comes with a sick heatsink, they can be a little noisy though.

yea im not to worried about the fan. it has 4 copper heatpipes but has a small fan id say only 60-80 mm and its probably on the lower side of that
